One of the two otolith organs of the vestibular system located in each inner ear. It is responsible for sensing linear (horizontal) movement of the head. The utricle contains a sensory epitheium, called the macula, a sensory otolithic membrane, calcium carbonate crystals called otoconia, and hair cells, which all work together to sense horizontal movement. The utricle is attached to the semicircular canals.
