One of the two otolith organs of the vestibular system located in each inner ear. It is responsible for sensing vertical movement of the head (such as going up in an elevator). The saccule contains a sensory epitheium, called the macula, a sensory otolithic membrane, calcium carbonate crystals called otoconia, and hair cells, which all work together to sense vertical movement. The saccule is attached to the semicircular canals.
