An uncontrollable, fast movement of the eyes. The movement can be horizontal, vertical, or rotary. Nystagmus can be caused by an inner ear abnormality or vestibular disorder. Nystagmus will occur during vestibular testing as a result of the eyes trying to compensate for the stimulation of the vestibular system. Measurements of nystagmus are taken during vestibular testing, such as a videonystagmography test, as a way to diagnose a vestibular disorder.
