A middle-ear implant is an implantable device which is an alternative to a traditional hearing aid. It is surgically implanted within the middle ear, using mechanical energy to transmit sound to the inner ear.
The middle ear implant is designed for adults with moderate to severe hearing loss who can not wear traditional hearing aids for medical reasons or because they are dissatisfied with traditional hearing aids.
The middle ear implant includes a microphone placed behind the ear which is held in place by a magnet implanted underneath the skin. The microphone sends the sound wave vibrations to a transducer which is implanted within the middle ear.
There are three companies who currently make middle-ear implant devices:
- Esteem by Envoy Medical
- Vibrant Soundbridge by Med-El
- Maxum by Ototronix
