Intensity describes the loudness of sound. It is defined as the sound power per unit area. The amount of energy carried in a sound wave is the intensity of the sound wave. The scale for measuring intensity is the decibel (dB) scale. The threshold of human hearing is assigned a sound level intensity of 0 dB. A sound that is 10 times more intense is assigned a sound level of 10 dB. A sound that is 100 times more intense is assigned a sound level of 20 dB, and so on in powers of 10.
