The standard unit of measurement for frequency, or pitch, of sound. The larger the Hertz, the higher the pitch of the sound. Newborns with normal hearing are shown to be able to hear sounds between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.
The speech frequencies (pitches at which speech is detected) is between approximately 250 Hz and 8000 Hz. For this reason, a hearing exam commonly evaluates hearing levels in this frequency range, to determine if speech detection is affected by hearing loss.
