The Good: Simple controls and charging
The Bad: Bulky in small ears
The Sound Worthy: Great cell phone talk-back clarity even while outdoors
The days of wired listening is coming to an end.
With the introduction of a new classification of headphones, called hearables or smart hearing devices, you can listen to phone calls, stream music with noise cancellation, experience sound augmentation, or even track your biometrics.
Not only are hearables becoming more popular, but the availability of True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds are on the rise as well. These are true wireless earbuds that require…you guessed it…no wires to either the device your streaming from, or to each other.
The LiteXim TW-08 TWS Wireless Earphones fall in the category of both hearables and true wireless earbuds. They can be integrated with a smartphone for call and music streaming, as well as DSP smart noise cancellation. And they have absolutely no wires.
We had the opportunity to test the LiteXim TW-08 earphones during the following activities:
- Driving while talking on the phone (right ear only)
- Downhill skiing while listening to music and talking on the phone
- Running while listening to a podcast
We love the design of the case and charging station, something you could easily throw in your pocket or purse.
While the design of the earbuds themselves are very sleek and sturdy, they are a little too big for small ears. Using both the medium and small buds, we had trouble getting them to stay in while engaging in any strenuous activity, such as running, even with them inserted deep in the ear canal.
We tested them out while skiing, and they worked perfectly underneath a ski helmet because the helmet seemed to hold them in place. However, without a helmet I would be worried about them falling out.
The controls for answering a call and pausing music streaming were very simple, just a press on the outside button (the only button).
Pairing was very simple right out of the box with my (first) iPhone 6. The pairing with my (second) iPhone 6 (they can pair with up to 2 smartphones) was a little more challenging. I could get one to pair, but not the other, until finally they both paired to the phone after some random button pushing.
Once the pairing process was done, they remained paired. At one point I moved the left one away from the right and heard a “disconnected” alert in the right device. This was a nice indicator, especially if you’re worried about losing one.
Sound quality was good, both indoors and out. I was able to hear a phone conversation on the top of a mountain, and the person was able to hear me back very clearly without the need to raise my voice.
I listened to music and podcast streaming while skiing outdoors and it was a good stereo sound quality. A few times while cruising down the mountain at fast speeds, the music cut in and out. The devices never came unpaired from the phone, but there seemed to be some temporary interruption of streaming.
It should be noted that cell phone streamlining only comes through one earphone (the right one), while music and other audio streaming comes through both (stereo). This wasn’t a big deal, as I could still hear the phone call, just a surprise.
The noise cancellation feature worked very well, to the point where I took the left earbud out while skiing because I felt like it was dangerous not to be able to hear my surroundings.
For outdoor activities, such as walking, running, biking, skiing, etc. we do not recommend wearing both because it can be a safety risk. In those cases, bone conduction headphones may be a safer choice.
I love the idea of the LiteXim earphones and the ability to wear earbuds with absolutely no wires. They were perfect for skiing, as the helmet kept them snug in place and I was able to listen to music and take phone calls while out on the mountain.
However, the bulky way they stick out of the ear does not make them the best option for other activities that can cause them to easily fall out of the ear. A smaller, or more ear-friendly design would make these completely wireless earbuds a better choice for more everyday wear.
