Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) is a condition that affects the jaw joint and surrounding muscles and nerves. It can be chronic and painful and can negatively affect quality of life.
Symptoms of TMJ include:
- Pain of the jaw joint and jaw muscles
- Jaw muscle stiffness and difficulty chewing
- Limited movement of the jaw
- Ear Pain
TMJ disorders are more common in women, and people ages 20-40 years old.
More traditional forms of treatment are using pain medications, eating soft foods, doing jaw exercises, and the use of bite splints.
The problem with bite splints is that they cannot be worn when eating and affect speech when worn. Bite splints are mostly worn at night when sleeping to prevent grinding and clenching of the jaw.
There may be another option for treatment of your TMJ disorder. It’s called the TMJ NextGeneration device.
It treats the TMJD via the ear canal by providing jaw joint support and awareness of the jaw. Two hollow custom earpieces are worn in the ear canal to provide relief of TMJD pain. It can be worn 24 hours a day, even when eating and does not block your ability to hear.
Once you are diagnosed with TMJD by your physician, your physician may prescribe the TMJ NextGeneration device for treatment.
This is where the Audiologist comes in. Once the TMJ NextGeneration device is prescribed, you will be sent to a certified Audiologist to have ear impressions made of your ear canals.
Ear impressions are made in the Audiologists’ office and typically take less than 20 minutes. The Audiologist will first insert a small cotton or foam block into the ear canal. You will then be asked to bite down on a spunge-like piece while the Audiologist fills your ear canal with a silicone material. The material will take approximately 3-5 minutes to settle, at which time it and the bite block will be removed.
The ear impressions are sent to TMJ NextGenerations manufacturing facility where the clear ear pieces are custom made for your ear. The ear pieces are then sent back to the Audiologists’ office where you can receive them within approximately 2-4 weeks.
The TMJ NextGeneration device is meant to reduce the painful symptoms of TMJ disorders. They are nearly invisible in the ear canal and can be worn at any time.
If you have tried other methods of treatment for TMJ disorder and are still experiencing painful symptoms, the TMJ NextGeneration device may be right for you. To see a list of participating physicians, you can visit their website: http://tmjnextgen.com/
