Earplugs is the generic term used to describe any plug that can be placed in the ear canal. These are typically used to block out loud noises, or to block out water when swimming. Earplugs can be made of foam, wax, or be custom made to fit the ear canal using a silicone impression of your ear. The better the earplug fits the ear, the more efficient it will be. Earplugs that are used to keep water out of the ear are called swimmolds (or swim plugs) and earplugs that are used to reduce loud sounds are called sound plugs.
