A graph that charts the softest sounds a person can hear.
Testing is performed in a sound-isolating booth using pure tones that are presented to each ear through ear inserts or headphones. The audiogram shows the type of hearing loss, the degree of hearing loss, and the configuration of the hearing loss in each ear.
The frequencies (pitch) of the tones are shown on the horizontal axis and the intensity (loudness) is displayed on the vertical axis. The person’s hearing thresholds are plotted on the graph by frequency and intensity. The right ear is represented by the symbol O and the left ear is represented by the symbol X. The symbols < and > represent the person’s hearing threshold when tested by bone conduction.
